We have seen a lot of Punjabi films which are actually remakes of ‘Channa Mereya’, ‘Mel Karade Rabba’ and many other Bollywood films. Well, another name has now been added to the list, namely Bollywood’s ‘Janhit Mein Jaari’ in which Nushrratt Bharuccha played the lead role.
This light-hearted comedy-drama addresses the social stigma surrounding condoms. The film traces the journey of a young girl who, despite social opposition, sells condoms to earn a living, and decides to teach her family, in-laws, and society an important lesson. The film successfully made a relationship with the audience and started a much-needed conversation around the taboo subject.
Many regional filmmakers have also shown interest in this socially relevant subject. As such, it has been reported that a southern production house has approached Bhanushali Studios Ltd. for the Tamil, Telugu, and Punjabi remake rights released in the public interest, with an A-list female star in each language.
A film that starts a conversation around such a taboo subject, it will be interesting to see how it suits different regional audiences! As per the news, its sequel is ready.
Coming to the Bollywood film box office, the film, which was made on a modest budget of Rs 20 crore, including global P&A costs, has already amassed Rs 23 crore in its satellite, digital, and music rights. In addition, it received a subsidy of Rs 2 crore from the Madhya Pradesh government and about Rs 4 crore at the box office, from which the producers have already earned a total profit of Rs 8 crore.
Well, let’s see who takes this bold step of making a completely Punjabi feature film on such a taboo subject. And most importantly, how well the audience is going to get it!
