There were several attempts to make a biopic on famous Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila, but all in vain. Bollywood director Imtiaz Ali has once again started trying to make his own biopic. The important thing is that Bollywood superstars will be seen in this film.
To give you a little background, Chamkila’s biopics are considered a mess due to the fact that so much effort has been put in by the directors but without success. The first attempt was made by Anurag Kashyap, Kunal Kapoor, and Navdeep Singh in the year 2009. The name of this project was Chamkila.
The next step was in our own Punjabi film industry. Deepa Rai, a British singer, started the film on the life of Chamkila and it was titled ‘Chamkila- The Legend’. The film, which began in 2012 and is said to be nearing completion, is still awaiting release. It was also rumored that Babbu Mann will play the role of Chamkila in Mushtaq Pasha’s next film. But none of these films saw the light of day!
If we talk about Imtiaz Ali’s contribution to the project, he has been developing the project since 2019 and is expected to start by the end of this year. Earlier, actors Ranbir Kapoor, Ayushman Khurana, and Karthik Aryan were asked to play the lead roles in the film, but now Dosanjh has been signed to play the lead role. In addition, the film will be produced under the director’s banner ‘Window Seat Films’ in association with Reliance Entertainment. The shooting will start in Punjab around August. Also, while the female lead for the lead role with Dosanjh is yet to be finalized, the screenplay and permissions have been reviewed by Imtiaz Ali.
Regarding the permissions, Ali has sought permission from Chamkila’s family to translate his life story on celluloid. He is said to have visited the Ludhiana home of the singer’s son Jaiman Chamkila several times in the last one year and has been constantly giving information about the development of the biopic.
Also, Diljit has always been inspired by the great singer and because the film will give him a chance to play on-screen once in a lifetime, he immediately came on board. In the untitled film, Diljit Dosanjh will be seen the role of Chamkila singing some original songs.
