The shift in consumption of content from cable TV to Dish TV and now to OTT has resulted in the loss of original television content that was made available to the public. Technology has been People are now consuming more Mobile phone and their smart TV. A piece of recent news comes the 3 Major Doordarshan Towers Shutdown in Punjab. Yes, you read it right. In this post we are going to see why this

Not only have the style and production of content changed, but the entire channel format has evolved as well. Unfortunately, Doordarshan, which started in 1959 — India’s oldest TV channel and a service offering home TV serials in India — could not cope with this change.

It has been decided to close three major Doordarshan towers in Punjab soon. As per the order of the government, analog systems for digitization are being shut down all over the world, due to which all analog transmitters in India are being shut down.

3 Tower Locations – Bathinda, Amritsar, and Fazilka will no longer provide service. According to the information received, the towers will be closed in phases till March 31, 2022. Bathinda Tower has been ordered to be closed from October 31, Amritsar 1 from December 31, and Fazilka from March 31 next year.

All 3 Towers have historical significance in the history of television in India. The Bathinda TV Tower, erected in 1985, became the tallest TV tower in Asia with a height of 135 meters, while Amritsar Doordarshan has been providing services since 1973 and was the third oldest television station in India. !

Mr. Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, Shiromani Akali Dal (Sanyukt) President and Rajya Sabha Member, S. Sukhdev Singh have expressed their dissatisfaction over this. He said that these towers have been providing facilities to the people of the state for a long time through their cultural and family programs and their closure was very disappointing. In addition, the expected shutdown of these Doordarshan transmitters was a decision that speaks to a lack of foresight and should be scrapped at any cost.

“I will soon be writing a letter to Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur seeking directions to close these towers,” Dhindsa said.

“The government’s argument is that the chaos of the channels has increased and people are no longer interested in watching the above Doordarshan TV programs,” he said. This is wrong. The people of the state still want to watch DD Punjabi as these channels capture the essence of Punjabi culture and create programs that can be watched with the whole family. ”

Dhindsa strongly demanded that the Union Government keep the old Doordarshan channels running.
